Students make rapid progress, move gracefully and perform confidently from memory. Visitors to the programme steal a quick glance at their parents and notice they are not stressed or strict disciplinarians. In fact they appear relaxed and smiling. And no, they haven’t bribed or pressured their children to practise. How do they do it?
At the heart of our programme is the parent’s connection with their child’s learning process. We teach parents how to work with their children daily to achieve fluency and beauty in their music. Everyone knows that we all enjoy what we can do well.
Experiencing learning either as a joy or a trial at a very young age has enduring implications for the whole of life. Depending on the quality of these early experiences, learning becomes an achievable adventure or a chore to be avoided.
When we create interest and enjoyment in daily violin playing and practice, abilities become exceptional and wondrous. We see it time after time. MIA students become superior learners because their parents know how to work happily and intelligently with them. The most important thing for parents to know is how to create interest and a love of learning.
MIA teachers have many years of experience in music education and learning. Members of the teaching faculty hold degrees in music and education; and some are graduates of the Suzuki Music School in Japan, studying several years with the founder of the method, Dr Shinichi Suzuki. For over 30 years MIA has taught hundreds of young children to become accomplished musicians.
